Will They Be Sorry To See You Leave?

Posted by:

“Some people brighten a room when they enter it; others when they leave.”

You’ve probably heard this quotation or some variation of it. I have no idea who said it originally, but it certainly is true. I’m sure you know people on both sides of the semicolon. Today I’d like you to consider a slight variation, this one mine:

“Some leaders brighten a workplace when they enter it; others when they leave.”

The question, of course, is: which ...

Why Your Workplace Needs to Be a Classroom

Posted by:

I’ve written quite a bit about how and why leaders need to be continuous learners. I believe that, as a leader, if you’re not continuously — and intentionally — learning, then you’re not really a leader.

I mean, c’mon — would a real leader ever think, “Well, that’s it. I’ve learned everything I need to. My brain is full, so I’m done.” Outside of Congress, that is.

But let’s leave aside for a moment the question of whether ...

What I Learned from Jay Leno

Posted by:

Motivational Speaker Bill StaintonA long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I used to write monolog jokes for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. One day after the show I happened to be sitting with Jay (no doubt having pizza; with Jay, it’s always pizza), and the conversation turned to fame. Specifically, the double-edged sword that is fame. At one ...

3 Leadership Lessons From Robin Williams

Posted by:

I wasn’t going to write about Robin Williams today. So much has already been said. But when I sat down to write, I couldn’t get him out of my mind. Maybe it’s because I’ve spent so much of my professional life in the comedy business, or maybe because it’s such a rare thing when a big national story hits you on a personal level. I don’t know. Anyway, I’m writing about Robin Williams.

But rather than focus on the news of ...

I’ll always remember the first time I met Jay Leno. It was around 1986, and I was the executive producer of Seattle’s legendary comedy TV show Almost Live! Jay was coming into town for some corporate event, and he had agreed to do a guest spot on our show. We’d arranged to pick Jay up at the airport, so at the appointed time I, along with our show host Ross Shafer (who already knew Jay), and a pre-“Science Guy” Bill ...

4 Traits of Great Leaders

Posted by:

motivational speaker Bill StaintonThe cover story in the current issue of Fortune magazine is “The World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.” Once again, I didn’t make the cut. I suppose it’s possible that I’m number 51, but my guess is that I’m further down the list.

But the story got me thinking: what makes a great leader? What are the skills that the truly effective leaders ...

Leadership and Trust – A Cautionary Tale

Posted by:

I once worked for a TV station where senior management wanted to get rid of one of the news anchors. Because of the stipulations of her contract, they couldn’t just fire her outright. So they came up with a plan. Their plan was to make her so miserable that she would feel compelled to quit.

Now, how could I possibly know about this? At the time, I was just a glorified secretary (and by “glorified” I mean “not glorified”).

I know about ...
