FORMER ALMOST LIVE! PRODUCER TO SPEAK AT ONE OF WORLD’S LARGEST TED EVENTS

Seattle, WA, 2/23/17  –  Bill Stainton, former executive producer of KING-TV’s comedy show Almost Live!, will be the opening speaker at one of the world’s largest TED events, TEDxStanleyPark, in Vancouver, BC, Canada on March 4th. The event takes place in the 2,659-seat Queen Elizabeth Theatre and will be streamed worldwide.

Stainton’s talk, titled Crack Your Cocoon, focuses on the importance of being open to, and accepting of, different ideas, experiences, and people. “I see us becoming more isolated from each other,” says Stainton. “But when we stay hidden inside that comfortable cocoon of ‘people like us,’ we’re actually robbing ourselves of the very people and experiences that can lead to our most creative ideas.” As an example of being open to new ideas, Stainton will tell the story of how his Almost Live! team “invented” Bill Nye the Science Guy out of desperation when a scheduled guest cancelled at the last minute.

The process of selecting speakers for a TEDx event is a long one, and Stainton was up against an initial field of roughly two hundred applicants from around the world. Gradually, that field was narrowed down to fifty, then twenty, and then the final twelve. Of those twelve, he was selected to be the opening speaker. Says Stainton, “It’s an honor to be the first speaker. It’s also a huge relief, because I don’t have to spend the entire day pacing back and forth waiting!”
